Are you considering relocating to Midland, Texas and wondering what the Permian Basin is? The Permian Basin is at the heart of Midland’s economy. It’s one of the most prolific oil and natural gas basins in the entire country. It’s part of the United States Mid-Continent Oil Field and a sedimentary basin stretching from parts of Texas to parts of New Mexico. It’s name came from the fact that it has one of the earth’s thickest deposits of rocks from the Permian geologic period. The Midland Basin is the largest component basin in the greater Permian Basin.
Midland, as well as Odessa and San Angelo, are headquarters for oil production activities in the Permian Basin. It also provides the nation with a major source of potassium salts, but the mines for these are located in other counties: Lea County and Eddy County. So, in Midland, the economy revolves around the oil production in the Permian Basin.
Midland Basin
The Midland Basin component of the greater Permian Basin is further subdivided. It’s composed of mostly laminated siltstone and sandstone. Our basin was filled by a subaqeuous delta. The delta deposited clastic sediment below our area. The eastern part of the Midland Basin gathered this sediment from the Ouachita orogenic belt around 300 million years ago. Back in the Permian period, the whole area was floodplains.
Moving To The Permian Basin
All of this is not new to residents of the Permian Basin, but outsiders relocating to Midland for the economic opportunities and impressively low unemployment rates, sometimes have only heard the term “Permian Basin” in passing. It’s OK though, you don’t have to know the history of the area to take advantage of the economic opportunities our area provides.
