If you’re like many people planning to sell a home this fall or winter, you know you need it to stand out – especially for prospective buyers who need more space to work from home. One way to do that is to add a “Zoom room.” Here’s what you need to know.
What is a Zoom Room?
A Zoom room is dedicated space for videoconference calls. It doesn’t have to be an entire room; it can be a corner where someone video chatting for work can keep things professional. (Although we tried to create a catchy rhyme for a niche like this, we just couldn’t pull it off – “conference corner” doesn’t cut it.)
The bottom line is that more people have shifted to working from home than ever before, and it doesn’t like that trend is ending anytime soon. In fact, experts say that remote work will probably be the norm well into 2021 – so buyers are looking for homes with adequate space to do it.
How to Create a Zoom Room
If you’re selling a house with limited bedroom space, you already know that it’s better to showcase all the bedrooms and avoid repurposing them. Buyers need those more than they need Zoom rooms!
But that doesn’t mean you can’t work a dedicated professional space into your home somewhere else. A lot of people are using the space under stairs, corners of dining rooms and even guest bedroom spaces. The key? Finding somewhere that a mess can’t show up behind you. The kitchen bar is out (unless you want to do the dishes before every meeting), the living room is a no-go if you have family members who like to lounge in front of the TV, and your bedroom is probably not the most professional space to showcase, either.
Dedicate an area that has strong Wi-Fi, has few personal objects, and can house a shelving unit where you can put a handful impressive books or cultivated knickknacks. Try to choose a space with at least some natural light, and add a comfy chair. You can even ask your REALTOR® to include the phrase Zoom room in your listing – it’s already happening in major markets all over the country, and buyers will appreciate the space more when they know what it is.
Design Tips for Staging a Zoom Room
Check out these tips for staging your Zoom room (or conference cubby, professional power corner or whatever you’d like to call it):
- Make sure artificial light is at least a foot away from the computer screen to avoid glare
- Take dust jackets off books, and arrange them artfully on shelving
- Put some art on the wall behind the chair, where it’ll be visible in the meeting
- Put a plant on the desk area (or behind the chair) to liven up the space
- Add office supplies to the desk to solidify what the space is for – buyers need a springboard for their imaginations
