Fort Concho Museum

Fort Concho, a national historic landmark, is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The fort, established in 1867 along the banks of the Concho River, was built to protect the settlements that cropped up on the wild Texas frontier. It was the hub for patrols and mapping the entire area (and farther west), as well. Made mostly from native limestone, it originally consisted of at least 40 buildings, spanning more than 1,600 acres in its heyday. The 4th and 10th Cavalry were both headquartered here, and some of the military’s most notable commanders served in garrison – including Ranald Mackenzie, Benjamin Grierson and William “Pecos Bill” Shafter. The post even hosted elements of all four regiments of the Buffalo Soldiers. The fort was only active until June 1889, when the last soldiers marched away, but now it’s a National Historic Landmark that includes 24 original and restored structures.

George Bush Childhood Home Museum

Perhaps the closest to living history as you’ll get, the George Bush Childhood Home museum is a wonderful place to visit. They’re open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sundays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. (Tours are given until 4:30 p.m. each day.)

The museum hosts Storytime for Toddlers through the Laura Bush Literacy Program, as well as several other events throughout the year.
