If you’re like most people who have to move during the COVID-19 pandemic, you have safety on your mind – but how are you supposed to swing a move without putting yourself (or anyone else) at risk?

This guide to moving safely during the COVID-19 pandemic explains.

How to Move Safely During the COVID-19 Pandemic

You’ve probably heard the phrase “social distancing” more times than you can count – and because social distancing is so necessary, your upcoming move will probably look a lot different than moves in the past have.

How to Practice Social Distancing While You’re Moving

It’s not always possible to keep 6 feet away from others, especially when you’re in a store, pharmacy or other physical location. And moving is no different – it’s a physical activity that generally requires more than one person. If you don’t have family members who live in your household, you’ll almost definitely have a hard time maintaining social distancing during the moving process. That may mean the safest and best option for you is to hire a moving company, which poses challenges of its own.

What About DIY Moves?

A DIY move may be the right choice for you at this time. You can attempt to limit the number of times you need to leave the house to get moving supplies by buying more than you think you’ll need on your first trip; if you have excess, you can return them later.

Remember:

  • If you stop for gas to fill up your moving truck, wear gloves at the pump
  • Try not to go into the gas station if you can avoid it
  • Wear a mask if you’re going to a station that pumps gas for you

Hiring a Moving Company

Moving is considered an essential business, which means moving companies are still in full swing (though they may be less busy than usual right now).

A lot of professional moving companies are taking extra precautions to protect their clients and their employees. If you’ve hired a moving company, the best thing you can do is isolate yourself in another area of your home, where the movers aren’t working. If you can, pack up all your own belongings so all the movers have to do is get them from Point A to Point B.

Remember to:

  • Clean all high-traffic areas before you settle into your new home
  • Pay special attention to door handles and light switches as you clean
  • Use your own pen when you’re signing paperwork, and try to conduct most of your business over the phone or online
  • Wash your hands thoroughly several times during the moving process
