Previously, like many animal control authorities, the City of Midland euthanized feral and nuisance cats. The old City of Midland’s stray cat euthanasia rate? 52 percent! This year though, the Midland Humane Coalition and the City of Midland announced a new Trap Neuter Release program that works wonders in other municipalities at reducing the numbers of feral cats . Plus, it makes cat lovers feel much better about animal control. Sometimes, this type of program’s called Trap Neuter Return.
Before, animal control trapped nuisance and feral cats. If the cat was too disagreeable for rehoming, euthanasia occurred. Studies showed over and over that the old method fails. Other feral cats just move into the same territory. The old way caused more fighting, more marking, more disease and never actually reduced the numbers of feral cats! The constant battle also drained animal control funds.
Trap Neuter Release programs include extremely humane, cost effective and productive practices. The Trap Neuter Release program for feral cats in the City of Midland allow residents, colony caregivers and veterinarians to work together. The plan? Actually reduce the feral population and associated nuisances without euthanizing healthy feral cats!
Another benefit of Midland’s Trap Neuter Release program? Less worries if your house cat escapes and doesn’t get along with strangers. Now, it may come home with an identifying eartip, a rabies vaccination and spayed or neutered, but at least it will come home. See, the Midland Trap Neuter Release program involves trapping, spay or neutering, vaccinating, eartipping and returning the cats to the same location where they were picked up. The eartip helps identify a previously sterilized feral cat.
Residents trapping cats through this program get spay or neuter vouchers from the City of Midland for the sterilizations. The program was made possible by a 50,000 dollar grant and support from the Midland city council. In the long run, though, it will still be far more cost effective, according to similar programs in other counties around the country, even if there had never been a grant involved.
