The Museum of the Southwest, located on Missouri Avenue in Midland, is a great place to spend a day. This interactive, fun and kid-friendly museum immerses you in experiences related to the arts, science, history and culture. The museum was founded in 1965 and is still going strong with rotating and permanent exhibits, programs and events tied into science, art, astronomy, archaeology, history and cultural experiences. It’s accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is a member of the Texas Association of Museums, the West Texas Triangle and the Midland Chamber of Commerce.

The Permian Basin Petroleum Museum offers exhibits related to the oil and gas industries in the region, which stretches from West Texas all the way into Southeast New Mexico. The museum offers exhibits that transport you through more than 230 million years of history through interactive exhibits, entertainment and more. You can check out the permanent Petroleum Exhibits in a 15,000-foot wing of the space that entertains guests of all ages.

President George W. Bush’s childhood home, which stands at 1412 West Ohio Avenue in Midland, was built in 1940. The Bush family purchased it in 1951 for $9,000, and you can tour it to view the family history of two presidents, two governors and two first ladies. The neighboring home serves as the visitors’ center, gift shop and administrative office.

The Midland Army Airfield Museum Hangar includes fantastic educational exhibits and historical aircraft. You’ll find exhibits that focus on West Texans serving in World War II, the largest bombardier training school in the nation during that war, and so much more. You’ll experience the sights and sounds of West Texas in the 1940s through exhibits and opportunities to fly in aircraft. It’s definitely a great way to spend a weekend day – the history is amazing.

The Midland County History Museum is an unassuming little spot that’s easy to miss – you might have driven by it a few times without even knowing it was there. This fabulous repository of information contains exhibits of early Midland history, pioneer relics, and mementos from the Civil War, World War I and World War III. You’ll also find photos and Native American artifacts – and a reproduction of the famed “Midland Man,” whose remains were discovered in 1953 and proved that human life existed in the Midland Area as far back as 9500 B.C.E.
